Bee Gees - Odessa [Expanded Version] reviewDuring 1967 and 1968, the Bee Gees became an international phenomenon with three albums and many more singles of folky balladry, most of them smashes. That stopped when their lavish 1969 double LP, Odessa, produced zero hits; guitarist Vince Melouney left, and Robin Gibb temporarily followed suit. The stereo and mono mixes included in the three-disc reissue of this disruptive opus present the Gibb brothers' arrangements at their most opulent: The string-laden instrumentals and soulful baroque pop evoke the splendor of the Moody Blues. And a third disc with demos suggests the unpolished sprawl of the Beatles' White Album. Stripped of window dressing, baubles like "Melody Fair" prove the Gibbs' effusive melodies and aching harmonies are ends in themselves.

The Bee Gees 1969 album, Odessa , is set to be re-released in a 3-CD expanded edition. This is the next in the reissue series that started with the 2006 release of The Studio Albums 1967-1968 . Look for it on January 13 from Reprise.

The group's fourth major release, Odessa started out as a major thematic piece but conflicts between Robin and Barry Gibb led to the streamlining of the album down to two-LPs. The sound was experimental for the group on many of the tracks, moving from progressive rock to country to lushly orchestrated ballads and even three orchestral instrumentals.

The album reached 20 on the album charts, the lowest of any of the group's first four albums, and only spawned the minor hit First of May which peaked at number 37. The infighting during the making of the album also led to the breakup of the group for the next two years....full text
